Domestic Heat PumpsSDH Building Services supplies and installs domestic heat pumps as an alternative to conventional heating systems or home heating.
Householders can make real cost savings on their annual utility bills using a domestic heat pump rather than a traditional gas boiler or oil-fired boiler for their home heating. Heat pumps are already popular in Denmark, Sweden and France, and are expected to become popular in the UK in the near future due to the benefits that they offer householders.
Why use a heat pump?
Benefits of using a heat pump for your home heating include:
Although based in Bolton, near Manchester, in Lancashire, SDH works across the North West of England as heat pump installers.

How do heat pumps work?
Heat pumps extract heat energy from the outside air even on the coldest days of winter and power radiators or hot water. Heat pumps are capable of meeting exacting industrial heating and cooling

Main types of heat pumps
There are three main types of heat pumps known as ground source heat pumps, air source heat pumps or water source heat pumps. All three can be used to heat your home or hot water. All three use a special fluid that constantly evaporates and condenses in a closed circuit which is controlled by valves and a compressor. Heat is removed from the air or from water or soil using a heat collection loop and delivered to the heating and hot water systems of the house.
What are air source heat pumps?
Air source heat pumps, as the name suggests, use air as the source of energy. They extract heat from outside air. Air source heat pumps can be fitted outside a house or in the roof space and generally perform better at slightly warmer air temperatures.
What are ground source heat pumps?
Ground source heat pumps, again as the name suggests, extract heat from the ground using plastic pipes that are buried into the ground in a borehole or horizontal trench. The pipe is filled with a mixture of water and antifreeze which absorbs heat from the ground. Ground source heat pumps require either horizontal trenches dug to a depth of 1-2 metres or borholes to a depth of 80 to 100 metres. Trenches need more land than boreholes but cost less. We can use coiled piping, known as slinky, to reduce the land needed for trenches. Ground source heat pump installations are generally unobtrusive and the pump is very quiet in operation.
What are water source heat pumps?
Water source heat pumps use a well, pond or even lake. They allow heat to be added or rejected from a loop using a boiler and cooling tower. They are more common in commercial buildings such as office buildings, hotels, health care facilities, banks, schools, and apartments. Generally, most domestic properties are suited to air source heat pumps which negate the need for any boreholes or trenches or water sources. Although SDH Building Services Limited recommends air source heat pumps we can provide and install ground source heat pumps or water source heat pumps depending on the requirements and preferences of the customer. Heat pumps can be used in conjunction with a solar hot water system to provide hot water. However, sometimes additional top-up heating may be required, for example an immersion heater to heat the water to the required temperature, particularly in winter.
